When the Last Sword is Drawn is set in the Meiji period, and tells the story of a lowly samurai, as recounted through the eyes of two acquaintances. Yoshimura choses to leave his loved ones and the hardships of his poor clan, to seek his fortune in the big city, in a renowned samurai faction. This poignant drama unfolds amidst a fascinating and chaotic period in Japan’s history. Winner of the 2003 Japanese Academy Award for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, this film also beat Kitano’s recent international hit, Zatoichi, to the prize for Best Picture!
