When the Last Sword is Drawn is set in the Meiji
period, and tells the story of a lowly samurai, as
recounted through the eyes of two acquaintances. Yoshimura
choses to leave his loved ones and the hardships of
his poor clan, to seek his fortune in the big city,
in a renowned samurai faction. This poignant drama
unfolds amidst a fascinating and chaotic period in
Japan’s history. Winner of the 2003 Japanese
Academy Award for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor,
this film also beat Kitano’s recent international
hit, Zatoichi, to the prize for Best Picture!
